On August 14th, Dave McGillivray ran into Fenway Park again, 30 years after he did it the first time in 1978 after finishing his historic run across America for the Jimmy Fund. McGillivray ran 54-miles throughout the day out-and-back along the Boston Marathon course to celebrate his 54th birthday (continuing a tradition of running his age in miles that began at age 12). To date, McGillivray has raised more than $26,000 for the Jimmy Fund and on his way to reaching his goal of $34,520 which represents $10 per mile he ran in 1978.
On June 11, 1978, Dave McGillivray began an 80 day, 3,452-mile solo run across the country to benefit the Jimmy Fund. He was 23 years old. When he finished inside Fenway Park on August 29, 1978 Mrs. Jean Yawkey commented that it was perhaps the most emotional night she had ever experienced at Fenway Park. Ken Coleman, Executive Director of the Jimmy Fund at the time and voice of the Boston Red Sox, belted out the introduction… “Ladies and Gentlemen, a Fenway Park greeting for Dave McGillivray.” Thus began a 30-year relationship between McGillivray, his company DMSE Sports, Inc. and the Jimmy Fund.
Dave’s 1978 run We’re hoping to create a virtual “memory book” of Dave’s 1978 run. If you knew Dave back then or simply followed his progress via the news and have any memories you’d like to share about the 78 run or any of Dave’s efforts on behalf of the Jimmy Fund, we invite you to share your thoughts and recollections on our blog…thelastpick.org
