Continuing with my day-to-day diary account of my 1978 Cross America Run for the Jimmy Fund from June 11, 1978, to August 29, 1978, a total distance of 3,452 miles averaging 45 miles a day, done 40-years ago to the day. I’m enjoying reading these cards that I mailed home every day as I haven't read them in 40 years! Below is what I wrote on these cards each day.
Day 48 — July 28, 1978
Miles run = 47.2.
Finish location – Creston, IA.
Comments: “Found out that another person, Alan Tardy from Florence, Mass., stayed at this motel about one month ago and he was also running across the US from San Francisco to his home. He is supposed to arrive one week from this Saturday and he is doing it alone? Yes, all by himself. Unreal.”
Day 49 — July 29, 1978
Miles run = 52.3.
Finish location – Ottumwa, IA.
Comments: “My longest day so far – 52.3 miles! Just two more days and we’re in Illinois and over the Mississippi!! My brother is flying out and meeting us on Monday, July 31st. That’ll really help me – he’ll be here for about one week.”
Day 50 — July 30, 1978
Miles run = 47.0.
Finish location – Mt. Pleasant, IA.
Comments: “Tomorrow the Mississippi and the EAST! Glad to get out of Iowa – people beeping at us all across the state and other trying to run us off the road. Have run 2,167 miles – physically OK – little tired by holding on strong! Till next time.”
Day 51 — July 31, 1978
Miles run = 50.0.
Finish location – Monmouth, IL.
Comments: “We crossed the Mississippi River today and entered into Illinois, our 8th state. Physically, I feel OK but I will be glad when it is over. It is very dangerous out on these roads. No breakdown lanes so the cars and trucks really challenge us!”
