MARATHON NOTEBOOK: DESI LINDEN, 2018 CHAMPION, TO RUN 125TH BOSTON MARATHON IN OCTOBER

THE MILFORD DAILY NEWS

Boston Marathon champion Desi Linden, who joined five frontline workers and community members in running the Patriots Day Mile on Boylston Street Monday morning, said she will return to run Boston on Oct. 11.

Linden, who set the world record for the 50-kilometer distance on April 13, won Boston in 2018 on a windy, rainy and cold day to become the race's first American female winner in 33 years.

The two-time Olympian has finished among the top five at Boston five times, including a runner-up placing in 2011.

“The 125th Boston Marathon is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to race the Boston Marathon in the fall,” Linden, who will run the race for the eighth time, said in a press release.

Upon crossing the finish for the Patriots Day Mile, Linden and Boston Athletic Association President and C.E.O. Tom Grilk surprised the group of frontline workers with invitational entries to October’s Marathon in appreciation for their work and service.

The frontline workers included Staff Sergeant Dorothy Anderson of Southbridge, a member of the Massachusetts National Guard since 2007; Rochelle Solomon, Compliance Officer at Brigham and Women's Hospital; Jessie Chen of BEN Running Club, board member of the Lingzi Foundation; Lindsay Devers, nurse anesthetist at Massachusetts General Hospital; and Chris Vasquez of PIONEERS Run Crew, a group that promotes diversity in the Boston running community.

McGillivray completes 49th Patriots Day marathon

Dave McGillivray actually ran 27.2 miles on Monday. The Marathon's race director rose at 4 a.m. to run 26.2 miles near his North Andover neighborhood, the 49th time he has run a marathon on Patriots Day - the first 47 coming at the Boston Marathon, which hasn't been held in person since 2019 because of the pandemic.

"Did this in memory of my good friend, Dick Hoyt," McGillivray said in an email of the man who died last month. Dick pushed his son Rick to 32 Boston finishes. "Great day for a marathon. Too bad and unfortunate that 30,000 other runners could not have joined me."

McGillivray left for Leicester later Monday morning to join Troy Hoyt, Dick's grandson, and Rick Hoyt in a run of the Patriots Day Mile.

"I’m running and going the 'extra mile' for Rick," McGillivray said.
