RUN MEDFORD, MCGILLIVRAY HOST NEW RACES ON SEPT. 18

WICKED LOCAL

Medford native Dave McGillivray is bringing a brand-new weekend-long celebration of community, running, and the City of Medford to his hometown.

Run Medford will be taking to the streets on Sunday, Sept. 18 with 8k, 5k, and one-mile courses, as well as kids' fun runs, to choose from – all starting and finishing at Medford City Hall. Medals, shirts, and copies of McGillivray’s book “Running Across America, A True Story of Dreams, Determination and Heading for Home” await those who cross the finish line.

The run raises funds for the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation, which will be distributing the dollars toward Medford nonprofits and community organizations, including the Charlotte and William Bloomberg Medford Public Library, the Power Kids Summer Enrichment Program, Medford Parks and Recreation Program, the Medford Senior Center, and The Center For Citizenship and Social Responsibility at Medford High School.

“Growing up in Medford has had a lasting impact on my life. This brand-new running event is all about celebrating the city that gave me my start,” said McGillivray. “I hope that Run Medford will inspire locals to feel great pride for the city and those visiting to discover all the things that make Medford such a special place.”

Medals and T-shirts presented to participants feature mustangs and Medford High’s colors of blue and white. The run coincides with the 50th Medford High School Class Reunion. Medford natives and winners of the Boston Marathon Johnny Kelley and Joe Smith will be honored as a part of the festivities. Medford Athlete Hall of Fame members as well as the Medford Police and Fire Departments will be taking part in the inaugural event.
