HOPKINTON — Former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, who ran the Boston Marathon this year for his charity, Tedy’s Team, returned to the start Thursday night to thank volunteers for the work they put into making the race possible.

Dave McGillivray has been associated with the Boston Marathon for three quarters of his life, from an 18-year-old participant to his current position as race director. The latter is a role that, for the last 32 years, has required him to run the race hours after the winners, such as Lawrence Cherono and Worknesh Degefa, break the tape on Boylston Street.

As the 122nd Boston Marathon gets underway on Monday, there will be something different about the start of the race.

That's because after 36 years, Jack LeDuc has officially retired from his yearly tradition of painting the marathon's iconic starting line.
