VIRTUAL RACES GIVE MARATHONERS A CHANCE TO COMPETE ON THEIR OWN

BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK

Each August, in normal times, about 13,000 people run seven miles up the Massachusetts coastline as part of the Falmouth Road Race. To kick off this year’s event, my wife held a watch in the air and yelled, “Go!” I took off running down a narrow trail where we live—in Munich. IN 2020, VIRTUAL RACING BECOMES A REALITY

PODIUM RUNNER

Looking back, it now seems a miracle that the Atlanta Track Club pulled off a successful U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials on February 29. Six weeks later, the Boston Marathon didn’t have a chance. By then, COVID-19 had brought the country to a near standstill, and with it all road racing.

FALMOUTH RACE TO ALLOW VIRTUAL PARTICIPANTS

THE BOSTON GLOBE

Amid your rhythmic footfalls, Falmouth Road Race landmarks come and go. The Nobska lighthouse. The flat miles along the Vineyard Sound. The loop around the inner harbor. You check your watch at each mile marker. Right on pace. As the beachside finish nears, the crowds grow larger and louder. You sprint beneath a giant American flag, cross the line 150 yards later, and find a bank of photographers clicking away. Then, with the satisfaction of a race well run, you step off your treadmill.
