TO ORGANIZE FENWAY PARK VACCINATIONS, THEY CALLED IN THE BOSTON MARATHON GURU

THE ATHLETIC

The first question I posed to Dave McGillivray during our conversation was as follows: “Do you plan on being the last person in Massachusetts to receive a COVID-19 vaccination?”

For those who may not be in on the joke, McGillivray is the longtime race director of the Boston Marathon who over the years has made it his business to scoot back out to Hopkinton at the end of a very long day and then make the 26.2-mile run to Copley Square. That way, McGillivray becomes the last person to finish the marathon.

This tradition is rooted in symbolism, given that as a diminutive child growing up in Medford, Mass., he often was picked last to play on youth sports teams.
